Here are some classes that I teach regularly:
Beginning Crochet
Crocheting is hot! And it’s easy to learn. In this class you’ll find out everything you need to get started. From selecting a hook and yarn, to the most commonly used stitches, to reading a simple pattern, students will get comfortable with the craft of crochet. Everyone will make a stitch sampler to prepare them for their next project. New and lapsed crocheters welcome!
Materials:
Crochet hooks sizes H through K; one skein of smooth, light-colored, non-variegated, worsted weight yarn.
Intermediate Crochet and Stitch Sampler
If you know how to chain stitch, single crochet, and double crochet, you’re ready to move on. This class teaches increasing and decreasing; working in rounds; post stitches; pattern stitches (shells, clusters, picots); working in front and back loop; and pattern reading.
Materials:
Crochet hooks sizes G and J; one skein of smooth, light-colored, non-variegated worsted
weight yarn.
Prerequisite:
Must know how to chain, single, and double crochet.
Introduction to Tunisian Crochet
It’s crocheting … it’s knitting … it’s a little of both! Tunisian crochet, also known as afghan stitch, is worked on a crochet hook but leaves the loops on the hook like in knitting. The results are the best of both worlds–beautiful, versatile items that look knitted or woven, but which are created with the ease of crocheting. Students who are comfortable with basic crochet stitches will love adding Tunisian simple stitch, knit, purl, and net to their repertoire.
Materials:
Regular crochet hook size H or larger (an afghan hook is not required, but bring one if you have it); one skein of smooth, worsted weight yarn, either variegated or a light solid color.
Prerequisite:
Must know how to chain, single, and double crochet.
More Tunisian Crochet
Ready to take your Tunisian skills to the next level? In this class, you’ll learn how to shape your Tunisian items, how to work with multiple colors, and how to do some advanced stitch patterns including openwork. We’ll work on Tunisian in the Round, too!
Materials:
Tunisian hooks sizes H and J (can be long, rigid hooks or shorter hooks with flexible plastic extensions; double-ended hook size K; 3 skeins of smooth, worsted weight, non-variegated yarn in light, contrasting colors.
Prerequisite:
Must be comfortable with Tunisian crochet, and be able to do Tunisian simple stitch and Tunisian knit stitch with confidence. We will quickly review the slightly more difficult purl and net stitches as a refresher.
Granny Squares
Learn how to make these versatile and portable building blocks for crocheted projects — scarves, pillows, afghans, vests, you name it. Crochet in the round to make squares!
Materials:
Crochet hooks sizes H and J; worsted weight yarn, in two solid colors, one skein or ball of each (light, bright colors are best).
Prerequisite:
Must know how to chain, single, and double crochet.
Beaded Triangular Wrap
Students will crochet a triangular beaded wrap using the diagonal crochet technique — no long foundation chains! — and two beading techniques (applied and pre-strung). Elegant lace mohair yarn makes the finished wrap warm, but light as a feather.
Materials:
Approximately 450 yards solid-color lace mohair yarn; approximately 25 yards solid-color worsted or sport weight yarn to practice with; crochet hooks size K and US size 10 (1.30 mm — must be small enough to fit through the hole in a size-6 bead); 2 tubes (approximately 550) size-6 hexagonal beads in complementary color.
Prerequisite:
Must know how to chain, single, and double crochet.
